Bump In The Night

Here's a piece I'm contributing to a show hosted by O'Neal Pignani at a shop called Static in Portland, Oregon.
The theme is things that go bump in the night and it opens on November 19th and runs until Christmas.  There will be artwork from some great artists on display so pop by if you happen to be in the area.
Edit:
So the show has been postponed to a yet to be determined date.  Too bad, some really good people involved.  I still had a ton of fun doing the piece so no big deal, really.  I'll update with a new date when it becomes available.

A Night Out At The Movies

First off, I'd like to thank my friend Kyle Marshall for putting together a great show last night and for asking me to do some artwork for it.  It really was a great collection of varied works, all inspiring.

I've posted my piece for the show above and in going with the theme of the show I did a take on Bullitt, the idea for which I owe my lovely wife.

Due to some requests at the show I'm going to explore the idea of selling some prints either here or some sort of online store.  Hopefully I can get my lovely wife to help with that as well.

(Thanks also to the mystery person who bought the print last night.)

If anyone happens to be in Ottawa tonight be sure to drop by OZ Kafe on Elgin St. and check out some fantastic work by some great artists working in the animation industry.  I gladly contributed one piece and can't wait to see what everyone else has to offer.

See you there.

Road again...

Here's yet another piece I had in mind after reading The Road. It's great to finally get some of this stuff down.

I'm really enjoying the gloom and doom of all this stuff, but I feel I may need to get into some happier work for a while.

Hope you like.

So I just finished reading The Road. Again. Seriously one of the best books I've ever read.

Nah, it is the best book I've ever read. It lacks the impact the second time around but man, what a story.

Any way, I did a piece a while ago after I read it the first time and after this time my head was filled with imagery. I love the world Cormac McCarthy created and for all you Dads out there, do not pass this one up.

I've got more in the works, but it all comes down to time...

Merry Christmas!

Well, not a lot of action on the Blog these days. I'm fortunate enough to have more work than I know what to do with and everything has come to a stop. There will be more done in the new year, I promise... For now a little Christmas card to make everyone feel all festive and stuff.

Everyone have a great Christmas and have a safe and happy new year!

I'm Gonna Make A Movie!

Well it's been about 10 years since I've posted anything, but I finally have something blog-ish going on other than work.

I've been completely mesmerized by the band Matt & Kim and as soon as I heard "Cinders" (off of "Grand") I knew I had to animate something to it. They were nice enough to let me use it even! It'll end up playing out kinda like a music video I guess, and it's pretty wild to even think of animating anything it's been so long.

The plan is to show my progress on the blog and just see how this thing ends up!

Here are some early character sketches which I'm liking so far. The bunny will probably end up more like the line drawing guy, the colour one looks a bit bent to me.

Jimmy Two Shoes Season 2 is finishing up so I should be able to focus on the film and hopefully post more often.

Now, how do you use this Flash program?

No Name...

Those who know me will know what inspired this piece and I would love to say that this could become a series, but we all know how well the "series" thing has gone in the past. I do have some more ideas along this line, and who knows, maybe they'll actually get done.

...Merry (Late) Christmas...

So, here's my Christmas card for what it's worth.

I really wanted to get this out earlier, for obvious reasons, but would've blown my brains out if I had to sit at my desk over the holidays.

Now that I'm shackled to my Cintiq once again, I could focus and get it done. So I hope everyone had a great break from the grind and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Some Painted Jimmy Layouts...

Here are a couple of Jimmy Two Shoes Layouts that I painted up last season. I was waiting till the episode aired, and I guess I got busy and forgot (it aired ages ago...).

Anyway here they are in no particular order. (Line art by Kyle Marshall).

Well, It's been forever since I've posted anything on here, and this hardly counts at that.

I've been doing the locations for a new series called Wild Kratts. It's a great project put together by Chris and Martin Kratt, the crazily energetic brothers that brought us "Kratts Creatures", "Be The Creature" and "Zoboomafoo". I used to watch these guys when I was younger and I'm very fortunate to get the chance to design on this show, and be part of the new Kratts Studio.

As we all know, when it rains it pours in animation and shortly after having to turn down the design gig on the second season of Jimmy Two-Shoes to work on Wild Kratts, I get a phone call from Sean Scott asking if I could lend a hand after some unexpected problems cropped up. Needless to say I jumped at the chance to get my hands on some Jimmy and have been burning the proverbial candle since.

So, after being pretty upset to not be a part of Jimmy this time around, I lucked out and now get to work on two terrific projects.

I only hope the world hasn't moved on without me after I finally get to haul my carcass out of the bomb shelter..., I mean basement.

Bad Stunt Doubles...

Wow, it's been a while!

This was supposed to be a quick piece, but life got in the way. Just another idea I have floating around in my melon. Maybe a series?

We shall see...

Finally, A Website!

So, it's been a little while since I've posted anything, and this is why. My portfolio is finally online. I've been working like crazy to get this going and it's up and running as of this morning.

This is great because now I can use my blog for some quicker posts and more loose work and keep my final work for my site.

Check it out at www.jdgportfolio.com and let me know what you think.

Monstroville...

These designs were done for Monstroville created by Viktor Von Kreep (aka: O'Neal Pignani), And headed up by Miah Alcorn. Lots of other great people on this as well. Make sure you head on over to the site and check it out. Some of these are over there as well but hey, I want to put em here too!
Lots more to come...

Robots Vs. nature II...

Here's the second in the robots vs. nature series I'm working on. I'm thinking it's a three-part series but you never know...

Success!

He totally loves it.

Go Sens Go...

I know the playoffs aren't even over yet, but I couldn't wait to refurbish this old Radio Flyer fire engine that had been destroyed by the rain and make it into the ultimate Sens ride for my little boy. It's art to me and easily my most meaningful project to date.
I unveil it tomorrow for him, hope he likes it!

Another Old New One...

Here's an old Gerald McBoing Boing design I did for season 1 of the show. I re-framed it though to make the trees more intimidating. I always liked the simplicity of it and am glad to have finally painted it up. I definitely didn't follow the paint style for the show, but I'm really happy with how it turned out.
I'm a little slow on posting these days, due to the fact that I'm doing some design work for a project called Monstroville. Very cool stuff, be sure to check out the production diary Blog, all sorts of cool people involved in this...
I will also be posting work for Monstroville over there.

Piano Man

Just some quick colour I did to re-vamp an old sketch that I had done a while ago. I wanted to play around a bit with a somewhat mono-chromatic theme...

Robots Vs. Nature...

This is the first in a series I have in mind. More to come...
